Apr 29, 2019 · Alfonso Herrera Zoo. The zoo at Chapultepec park opened in 1927 and is named after its founder, biologist Alfonso L. Herrera. The zoo facilities were completely remodeled between 1992 and 1994. It is home to almost 2000 animals of some 250 species, of which 130 are native to Mexico.

Mexico City’s Chapultepec Zoo is actually but the most famous of several zoological parks in and around the city. Even more widely unknown is that today’s Torre Latinoamericana actually stands on the site of Moctezuma II’s zoo in ancient Tenochtitlan.
Alfonso Herrera Chapultepec Zoo. One of the most iconic spots of the city, the zoo was inaugurated by biologist Alfonso L. Herrera in 1924, inspired by the Giardino Zoológico em Museo de Zoología de Comune di Roma.
The zoo has a good reputation for conservation and is one of very few outside China that have succesfully bred Giant Pandas. There is an incredible varietly of wildlife here, and there are all the signs of a well-designed and properly run zoo.
