A sailor on leave, Alex (Bill Williams), wakes up after getting drunk in the apartment of a woman named Edna, with a huge wad of cash. He goes to return it, and finds her dead. He enlists a dance hall girl, June (Susan Hayward), to help him figure out who murdered Edna, so he doesn’t get blamed.
At the end, the main characters exit the 8th Police Precinct. It is night, and the streets are deserted. Yet when June and Alex drive away in the police car, it can be seen through the back window of the vehicle that the streets bustling with activity, cars, and people, and it's bright and sunny.

Deadline at Dawn is an exceedingly well-directed noir infused with the proletarian spirit of progressive 30's theater. Some may consider its stylized dialogue a literary conceit, and conclude that its author is patronizing the working class.

Feb 1, 2015 · Only some of these are explained by the twist ending. The camera focuses on a fly crawling on the face of a sleeping woman. We are instantly plunged into the seedy side of life in nighttime New York City. The drunken woman is a “bad girl” who evidently owes her gentleman caller $1400.
Jan 4, 2013 · When Hayward and Williams discover the murdered woman’s body, they proceed in relatively short order to loot her refrigerator, leaving fingerprints (and presumably crumbs) everywhere. Also, why exactly is Hayward helping this naive and potentially murderous sailor?
