Nov 7, 2019 · Dedicated in September 1986 as the Dean Edwards Smith Center, the 300,000-square-foot structure stands on seven and one-half acres of the University's south campus. Over 20,000 cubic yards of rock were removed to make room for the 340-foot-wide, 380-foot-long and 140-foot-high building.

The first game at the Smith Center was on January 18, 1986 featuring #1 North Carolina vs #3 Duke. The hybrid dome is also used for non-basketball events such as university and local high school graduations.
The Smith Center became the home of the Tar Heels in 1986 and has since become a cherished traditional symbol of Carolina basketball. The Carolina Basketball Museum is located in the adjacent Ernie Williamson Athletics Center. NOTICE: The Dean E. Smith Center is currently closed to the public outside of games and special events.

The Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center opened on January 18, 1986. The first game was a 95—92 victory for UNC—Chapel Hill over Duke. The state-of-the-art building held more than 21,000 fans, more than double the capacity of Carmichael. Students and alumni quickly took to referring to the domed structure as the "Dean Dome."
