It looks like the long-awaited sequel to Pokemon: Detective Pikachu is finally being pushed ahead.
Portlandia and Baskets co-creator Jonathan Krisel is in talks to direct Detective Pikachu 2, with Chris Galletta writing the script, a rep with Legendary Entertainment has confirmed to IGN. Deadline first reported the news today.
The film's development has been a bit of a rollercoaster, as the sequel was confirmed way back in 2019 before the first Detective Pikachu had even hit theatres. Oren Uziel, who worked on 22 Jump Street and Mortal Kombat, was reported to be writing the film.
Fans looking forward to the film heard some bad news in 2021, however, when star Justice Smith alluded to the film being cancelled. "I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes. I don't think it's going to happen," he said.
Detective Pikachu 2 seemed to be back on track as of earlier this year though, as Legendary Entertainment said the sequel was in "active development".
The original film became the best performing video game adaptation of all time when it premiered in 2019, but has since been outperformed by the likes of the Uncharted movie and Sonic the Hedgehog.
In our 8/10 review of the first film, IGN said: "Detective Pikachu mixes humor, heart, and gloriously-rendered Pokémon to deliver a simple yet entertaining time."
