"DMZ missions are back online. We have grown our area of operations. Vondel, Ashika Island, DRC Building 21, Koschei Complex, and Al Mazrah have all been greenlit for infiltration. Accept contracts, explore side objectives, engage hostile enemy combatants, and search for valuable items, all while trying to complete your mission and get out alive."

    — Playlist Description

DMZ features several locations called Exclusion Zones, with the first being Al Mazrah, featuring Al-Qatala as the main enemy force, and supporting up to 60 players. A second Exclusion Zone, Building 21, was added as part of Season One Reloaded and supports up to 12 players.

With Season Two, a new Exclusion Zone was added into DMZ, Ashika Island, supporting up to 18 players, while a crashed Shadow Company plane was added near the Sattiq Cave Complex alongside Shadow Company Agents. Both Building 21 and Ashika Island feature Shadow Company as the main enemy force.

The release of Season Three removed the Shadow Company Agents from Sattiq Caves and added Las Almas Cartel Agents to the Hafid Port. A new Exclusion Zone was added with Season Three Reloaded, Koschei Complex, supporting up to 12 players and featuring Al-Qatala and Las Almas Cartel as the main enemies. Unlike the other Exclusion Zones, Koschei Complex can be reached within Al Mazrah via four entrances, including newly added ruins near the Oasis. Al Mazrah was also updated with a massive sandstorm occuring in the northern part of the map, especially in Al Mazrah city.

With Season Four, a new Exclusion Zone was released, Vondel, supporting up to 18 players. Konni, under the name of Peacekeepers, is featured as the main enemy force and can be seen fighting against Shadow Company in the city. Konni agents were also added to Ashika Island. In Al Mazrah, the sandstorm was removed, leaving a significant part of Al Mazrah City covered with sand. With the Season Four Reloaded update, Konni agents were added to Building 21.

With the release of Season Five, Active Combat Zones were introduced in Al Mazrah and Vondel where Agents from various factions are actively fighting each others, also using Killstreaks such as Mortar Strike and Precision Airstrike. The Active Combat Zones in Al Mazrah faced Al Qatala against Konni while Konni faced Shadow Company in Vondel. In Vondel, Shadow Company Agents wouldn't target the players unless they are attacked, with a friendly fire warning displayed first. The Las Almas Cartel Agents were removed from both Al Mazrah and Koschei Complex while Konni was added to Al Mazrah and some part of Koschei Complex.

Following the Season Five Reloaded update, the Zaya Observatory in Al Mazrah was partly destroyed revealing an underground bunker and tunnels, similarly to the ones featured in Shadow Siege. The Active Combat Zones in Vondel were removed alongside the Shadow Company Agents while Las Almas Cartel Agents were added to the Cruise Terminal; new Active Combat Zones were introduced to Ashika Island facing Konni against Shadow Company.

Among the various Agents that can be encountered in the different Exclusion Zones, several of them appear as unique and more powerful enemies called Bosses or Commanders. Some of them can be seen carrying a Weapon Case.

Within Al Mazrah several Commanders can be encountered such as the Juggernaut, also known as Armored Commander, and the Commander Helo. The Chemist can also be found within the radiation zone. Two additional Commanders were added to Al Mazrah with the release of Season Three, the Pyro and the Scavenger.

At the launch of DMZ, three factions were available: Legion, White Lotus and Black Mous. Following the release of Season Two, the missions were all reset with many being removed, modified or moved from one faction to another or to different tiers. A new faction, called Crown, was introduced and was only available to the players who purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

A new faction was added with Season Three, REDACTED, which was available to every player. REDACTED only featured 3 Tiers of missions at first, with Tier 4 and Tier 5 being added with Season Three Reloaded.

With Season Four, another reset took place. Legion and REDACTED were removed from DMZ while another faction, Phalanx, was added. Black Mous also became the new introductory faction.

Another faction was added with Season Five, Shadow Company, which was available to every player. Shadow Company only featured 2 Tiers of missions at first, with Tier 3, Tier 4 and Tier 5 being added with Season Five Reloaded.

With the release of Season Four, Upgrades were added to DMZ, which grant permanent passive bonuses that the player can unlock by extracting or dead-dropping various items in DMZ. Similar to Missions, Modern Warfare II owners can also access exclusive Crown upgrades, which are tied to their reputation with the Crown faction.

Various bonus effects and advantages can be obtained for use in DMZ matches such as free items when using a specific Operator Skin, or a reduced Insured Weapon Cooldown for specific Weapon Blueprints. Many of them can be purchased in the store through bundles while some can also be obtained through gameplay unlocks. Each bundle purchased also adds ...
