Ed Chilton inherits his family's hardware store following the death of his beloved mother, Mabel. He lives with his maternal uncle, Benny, who appears to be happy that his annoying sister is out of his life.
Ed misses his mother, who has been dead for a year. He had lived almost his whole life with her and they had been very close. When a stranger appears one day from the "Happy People Ltd." company and claims that they can bring his mother back to him for $1000, he agrees right away.
Ed (Steve Buscemi) loves his mother, but she's been dead for a year. When the Happy People Corporation gives him the chance to bring her back from the dead, he readily agrees.
Ed's just an average guy who happens to really love his mother. So much so that when she dies Ed tries to bring her back from the dead—and succeeds.
An out-of-towner reanimates the dead mother (Miriam Margolyes) of a hardware-store clerk (Steve Buscemi), only now she is a cannibal.
