    (While it's true that we don't review Elementary on a weekly basis, we like to check in on select shows when finale time comes around.)

    No, "The Grand Experiment" was never going to top the thrills of last year's two-part Moriarty-centric finale, but it succeeded in taking us out of Season 2 on a solid, satisfactory emotional level. As for the mystery part/danger element? Well, that's where this episode felt light, but Mycroft's exit from the show felt exceedingly apropos - garnering great performances from Jonny Lee Miller and Rhys Ifans in the process.

    It's also true that "The Grand Experiment" wasn't even as good as other, better Season 2 entries and if one was looking for intensity, "Paint if Black" from a few weeks back felt more like a big season ender. And the subsequent reveal that Mycroft was (adopted) MI6 wasn't exactly the whiz-bang of a twist that I feel the show hoped it would be. We'd already learned not to trust anything he said, no matter his overall intentions, so to learn that there he was hiding one more secret (one actually even more in line with Sherlockian canon) wasn't a huge shock.

    Season 2 continued Elementary's knack for honing in on very poignant, emotional moments between its main characters. The show is never lacking in the vulnerability department.
