Presbyterian minister, inventor, educator. Known for. Long-term president of Union College. Signature. Eliphalet Nott (June 25, 1773 – January 25, 1866), was a famed Presbyterian minister, inventor, educational pioneer, and long-term president of Union College, Schenectady, New York .
Eliphalet Nott was the father of Sarah Maria Nott (Potter) the first wife of Alonzo Potter. Eliphalet Nott was born on June 25, 1773 in Ashford, Connecticut. He was the youngest child of Stephen and Deborah (Sheldon) Nott, they had nine children. In 1759 the family home burned down with nearly all the contents.
He served during the Civil War as chaplain under his brother, General Robert B. Potter. President Eliphalet Nott Potter - 1876. Potter returned to upstate New York in 1869 to the associate rector of St. Paul's Church in Troy until 1871. He married Helen Wolf Fuller on April 28, 1870, the daughter of Joseph Wiltsie and Mary (Wolf) Fuller.
