Share This. The M.A. in Cinema Studies provides students with an advanced course of study in the history, theory and criticism of motion pictures. Graduates from the program have gone on to successful careers as film curators, programmers, preservationists, as well as film critics, instructors, screenwriters, filmmakers and industry professionals.
Degree Requirements. 60 credits from course groups listed below. 30 credits from Cinema and Media Studies core courses: (Choose one from each category) A. GATEWAY. CMS 301 Film and Media Studies: Analysis (5 credits) B. HISTORY I. CMS 310 History of Film: 1895-1929 (5 credits) CMS 311 History of Film: 1930-1959 (5 credits) C. HISTORY II
Tier I. The core curriculum for Cinema Studies majors includes five courses taken in sequence: Intro to Cinema Studies, Film History, Film Theory, Television: History & Culture, and an Advanced Seminar. Recent Advanced Seminar topics have included Adaptation, Costume Design, Horror, Sci-Fi & Difference, Orson Welles, and Surrealism and Cinema.
