Fort Missoula was established by the United States Army in 1877 on land that is now part of the city of Missoula, Montana, to protect settlers in Western Montana from possible threats from the Native American Indians, such as the Nez Perce.
Fort Missoula is located in southwest Missoula, Montana. Seven miles south from I-90 on Reserves Street. The Historical Museum of Fort Missoula is located at 3400 Captain Rawn Way. We invite visitors to explore the rich history and culture of western Montana found throughout our 32 park-like acres.
Fort Missoula was established as a permanent military post in 1877 and built in response to requests of local townspeople and settlers for protection in the event of conflict with western Montana Indian tribes.

Mar 4, 2023 · As the name implies, the exhibit focuses on the foundation and development of Fort Missoula, dating back to 1866. The fort began as a small trading post and quickly became the largest White settlement in the region. The gallery explores the inception of the town through its unique military history. The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula covers 32 acres of historic Fort Missoula property and includes over 20 historic structures; some original to Fort Missoula, while others have been brought to the museum to ensure their preservation. Our grounds are self-guided.

The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula hosts four separate indoor gallery spaces: Main Gallery, Orientation Gallery, North Gallery and Heath Gallery. Exhibits change throughout the year, highlighting many different aspects of Missoula County’s History.
Fort Missoula is one of Montana’s most visible and accessible links to America’s wars and battles. The Fort was founded in 1877 when two companies of the U.S. Army’s Seventh Infantry were stationed here for action in the Indian Wars, including the forced surrender of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe.
