Gandhi is a 1982 epic biographical film based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, a major leader in the Indian independence movement against the British Empire during the 20th century. A co-production between India and the United Kingdom, the film was directed and produced by Richard Attenborough from a screenplay written by John Briley.
Summaries. The life of the lawyer who became the famed leader of the Indian revolts against the British rule through his philosophy of nonviolent protest. In 1893, Mohandas K. Gandhi is thrown off a South African train for being an Indian and traveling in a first class compartment.
Gandhi realizes that Indians have been made into second-class citizens in their own country, and he begins a program of civil disobedience that is at first ignored by the British, then scorned, and finally, reluctantly, dealt with, sometimes by subterfuge, sometimes by brutality.
