Greenock is a historic industrial town by the Firth of Clyde, 25 miles west of Glasgow. Greenock grew from a fishing community to become the site of the first dock on the Clyde in 1711. Much of the west end of Greenock retains its impressive Victorian buildings, not least the 245-foot Victoria Tower which remains incomplete.

Greenock is a port on the Clyde estuary, with a population of 41,000 in 2020. Historically it was part of Renfrewshire but is now within Clydeside in the Central Belt of Scotland. Most visitors are just passing to and from the ferry piers, but the town has several interesting mementos of its history.
Some 22 miles downstream of Glasgow, most of the town lies on steep north facing slopes giving magnificent views across the Firth of Clyde to the mountains beyond. In the late 1500s, Greenock was no more than a fishing village in the shadow of a castle that has long since disappeared.
