Hannah Wilke (born Arlene Hannah Butter; (March 7, 1940 – January 28, 1993) was an American painter, sculptor, photographer, video artist and performance artist. Wilke's work is known for exploring issues of feminism, sexuality and femininity.
May 29, 2023 · Her work titled Gestures from 1974 consists of a black-and-white video that lasts about half an hour. During the video, Wilke performs various gestures and expressions by only using her hands and face.
The exhibition, Hannah Wilke: Gestures, held at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, The State University of New York, between October 3, 2008 and January 25, 2009, included over sixty works by the artist. It began with a focused look at Wilke's early clay sculpture.
