Enjoy the best parts of Hawaii – its beaches, gardens, parks and hiking trails – without spending much. Most beaches in Hawaii are free and accessible year-round. Some – like Hanauma Bay on Oʻahu and Hāʻena State Park on Kauaʻi – require reservations with a small fee for visitors.
On Oahu you can take public transportation very economically. You can also go all over the island. On Maui and the Big Island you will find public transportation a pain or inconvenient. There is bus service, however, you must be patient and hang loose a lot.

- Hawaii may be a year-round destination, but there are a couple of “off-peak” periods. Look out for cheaper flights and discounted hotel rooms in January (last two weeks), February, May, September and October.
- A condo rental is much cheaper than a resort stay. A weeklong hotel stay in Waikiki in May is around $200 a night. A nice one-bedroom condo on the other hand can be secured for as little as half that.

For islands, roughly: Oahu: Most populated, most restaurants/bars, good mix of everything. Kauai: Quieter garden island but some very good hiking like kalaulau trail and waimea canyon. Def need a car here. Big Island: Kona has manta rays, and there are also cool black and green sand beaches + volcanoes national park.
