Honduras, country of Central America, between Guatemala and El Salvador to the west and Nicaragua to the south and east. The Caribbean Sea washes its northern coast and the Pacific Ocean its short southern coast. Its area includes the Bay Islands offshore in the Caribbean. The capital is Tegucigalpa (with Comayaguela).
Early history. Honduras. When the Spanish arrived to colonize Honduras, the land was occupied by a variety of Indigenous peoples, the most advanced of whom were the Maya.
Once part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. After two and a half decades of mostly military rule, a freely elected civilian government came to power in 1982. The Honduran economy has slowly rebounded after COVID-19 and severe storms in 2020 and 2021.
