My Summer Story (originally released in theaters as It Runs in the Family) is a 1994 American comedy film directed by Bob Clark that serves as a sequel to his 1983 film A Christmas Story. Like the previous film, it is based on semi-autobiographical stories by Jean Shepherd , primarily from his book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash .
The narrator, Jean Shepard, who was one of America's great humorists and story-tellers, forced upon us a false reprise of the warm wit he used in ACS. He over-emoted, and why he did that I'll never know. He somehow managed to become an annoying, overwrought parody of himself. The writing and acting in IRITF is inauthentic and forced.

Jean Parker "Shep" Shepherd Jr. (July 26, 1921 – October 16, 1999) was an American storyteller, humorist, radio and TV personality, writer, and actor. With a career that spanned decades, Shepherd is known for the film A Christmas Story (1983), which he narrated and co- scripted , based on his own semiautobiographical stories.
Other than actress Tedde Moore who returns for a brief scene as Ralphie’s teacher Miss Shields, no one else from the original cast is back. But behind its creation writer Jean Shepard returns as the grown up Ralphie narrating the story and original Christmas Story director Bob Clark returns to tell this summer tale.
