Since January 5, 1911, the men of Kappa Alpha Psi® have represented the very essence of achievement, in every field of human endeavor. We have grown to enjoy a footprint of close to 700 chapters in 400+ communities across the continental United States and in 13 overseas territories.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. ( ΚΑΨ) is a historically African American fraternity. Since the fraternity's founding on January 5, 1911, at Indiana University Bloomington, it has never restricted membership based on color, creed, or national origin though membership traditionally is dominated by those of African heritage.
Kappa Alpha Psi (ΚΑΨ), an international historically Black fraternity, has chartered over 400 undergraduate chapters in the continental United States, plus alumni and international chapters.
Kappa Alpha Psi® is the 2nd oldest existing collegiate historically Black Greek letter fraternity and the 1st intercollegiate fraternity incorporated as a national body. It is the first Greek letter organization to establish its Alpha Chapter on Indiana University’s campus.
Kappa Alpha Psi ®, a college Fraternity, was born in an environment saturated in racism. The state of Indiana became the 19th state of the Union in 1816 and it founded Indiana University in Bloomington four years later.
Founder John Milton Lee was a scholar, loyal, and tireless worker for the growth of the fraternity. Due to his idealist character was commonly referred to as ‘a dreamer’ during the fraternity’s early years. He was born in Danville, Indiana, on September 7, 1890, and was the third of four children.

Membership in Kappa Alpha Psi® is a lifelong dedication to the ideas and lofty purposes of Kappa Alpha Psi® , which considers for membership only those aspirants whose personal, social and academic qualifications are acceptable to both the College and Fraternity.
About Kappa. Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on the campus of Indiana University on January 5, 1911. The Fraternity’s fundamental purpose is “achievement”. Early in the 20th century, African-American students were actively dissuaded from attending college.
Founder Marcus Peter Blakemore, affectionately known as “Blakie”, a man of deep religious convictions and quiet confidence, contributed greatly to education, his community, his church, hospitals and his Fraternity, was born in Franklin, Indiana on January 3, 1889 and was the eldest of four children.
