Oct 20, 2021 · While Starved Rock State Park is the more renowned Illinois hiker haven, if you travel 2.5 miles south, you’ll reach Matthiessen State Park, where wanderers will be rewarded with views of canyons, ravines, sandstone rock formations, prairie lands, and waterfalls.

The horseback riders' camping and multi-use trails are open from May 1 (weather permitting-determined by park staff) to November 1. Call 815-667-4726 to check conditions and status before coming to use these facilities.
Matthiessen State Park is an Illinois state park located a few miles south of the more famous Starved Rock State Park. The main entrances to both parks are located on Illinois State Route 178.

A quiet, quaint state park - pretty trails. Figured we would give the “Hocking Hills of Illinois” a shot for our 30th anniversary based on photos we saw online. Stayed in a lovely Airbnb in North Utica to stage ourselves for our hiking and biking adventures.
