The Ohio Senate is the upper house of the Ohio General Assembly. The State Senate, which meets in the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, first convened in 1803. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election.

The Ohio Senate is the upper chamber of the Ohio State Legislature, which is also composed of the Ohio House of Representatives. The state legislature is the law-making branch of state government. The members of the Ohio Senate represent all 88 counties in Ohio, divided into 33 districts.

Senate President. The Senate President is the presiding officer of the Ohio Senate, elected by all members of the Senate to conduct session, which includes recognizing members in debate, preserving order and decorum, calling for votes and signing all acts.
Session is the meeting where all senators assemble to cast votes on bills, resolutions, and executive appointments. By law, the Senate President calls the Senate to order on the first Monday of January for each new General Assembly. A new General Assembly is established every two years.
