Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, Old Québec is the most intact fortified town north of Mexico, retaining its colonial architecture for over 400 years. It is the historic and cultural heart of Québec City, and the birthplace of French North America.
The Historic District of Old Québec is an urban area of about 135 hectares. It is made up to two parts: the Upper Town, sitting atop Cap Diamant and defended by fortified ramparts, a citadel, and other defensive works, and the Lower Town, which grew up around Place Royale and the harbour.

The streets are steep and the sidewalks are narrow. If you have recently had knee, leg or hip surgery, this may not be the year for you to visit Old Quebec. As an overweight 58 year old with achey knees, the many hilly streets were a challenge, but somehow I made it, and it was worth it.
