  1. Jun 1, 2010 · It's not a bad deal. But oh, choosing wisely. Trailers, commercials and movie posters can make everything seem like a tour-de-force, can't miss, must-see work of cinematic brilliance. We know that's not the case. So we've broken down 2010's slate of summer movies into seven essential categories.

    Robin Hood - May 14

Synopsis: In this Ridley Scott adaptation of the classic tale, an archer (Russell Crowe) in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion fights against the Norman invaders and becomes the legendary hero known as Robin Hood. Cate Blanchett, Danny Huston, Max von Sydow, Kevin Durand and Mark Strong co-star. Our Take: This movie looked OK at first - that is, until we were blown out of our theater seats by the full trailer. Remember the days when epic story, great action and skilled acting trumped explosion...

    MacGruber - May 21

Synopsis: A comedy based on Will Forte's bumbling secret agent whose lack of skill and abundance of personal problems serve as a detriment to him - and those around him. Ryan Phillipe, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Val Kilmer (yes, Val Kilmer) costar. Our Take: There are moments in the MacGruber trailer which are very funny (the bomb wire bit slays me), but even with the "R" rating, at this points it seems unlikely that a mildly-amusing SNL sketch-turned-movie could be worth anything more th...

Shrek Forever After - May 21

Synopsis: Longing for the days when he felt like a "real ogre," Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking deal-maker, Rumpelstiltskin and finds himself in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it's up to Shrek to undo all he's done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love. Our Take: So long as this really and truly is the final Shrek...

Get Him To The Greek - June 4

Synopsis: In this spinoff of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Russell Brand reprises his role as vain rocker Aldous Snow. Jonah Hill plays Aaron Green, a music industry gopher who is dispatched to London by none other than P. Diddy to escort Snow to a concert appearance in NYC. Debauchery and hilarity ensue. Our Take: Hey, if you liked Sarah Marshall and was a fan of Brand's rockstar hijinks, then why not have a go at Greek? Personally, I'll wait for the DVD. .

    Splice - June 4

Synopsis: Two young rebellious scientists (Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley) defy legal and ethical boundaries, splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named "Dren", the creature rapidly develops into something fantastic...and deadly. Our Take: Vincenzo Natali (Cube) is a writer/director known for taking an interesting premise and adding deeper layers to it. We have a feeling Splicecould be good...just not the creature-feature most people are expecting. .

    Killers - June 4

Synopsis: A vacationing woman (Katherine Heigl) meets her ideal man (Ashton Kutcher), leading to a swift marriage. Back at home, however, their idyllic life is upset when they discover their neighbors could be assassins who have been contracted to kill the couple. Our Take: Shouldn't this film be titled Mr. & Mrs. Smith: The Reboot? More to the point, the names "Heigl and Kutcher" headlining a film automatically make me never want to see it. Pass. .

The Last Airbender - July 2

Synopsis: In this M. Night Shyamalan adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series, 12-year-old Aang (Noah Ringer), the new "Avatar," must return peace and balance to his world and master "bending" all four elements - Fire, Water, Earth, Air - in order to stop the imperial Fire Nation. Our Take: So far this film has looked like it will redeem Shyamalan's bruised reputation as a filmmaker, but some lukewarm early word of mouth has us a bit wary. Still, we're hoping for the best. .

    Predators - July 9

Synopsis: A group of elite warriors are abducted from Earth to be hunted by members of a merciless alien race known as Predators. A reboot of the popular sci-fi/horror franchise. Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Alice Braga and Derek Mears star as the hunted humans. Our Take: The trailer was cause for excitement, and it seems producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal have recaptured the magic and menace of the now-classic original Predator. We'll definite...

    Despicable Me - July 9

Synopsis: Super villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), is planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way - until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes. Our Take: Maybe this film will be a surprise charmer, but early impression is that there are better animated m...
