Ritter had a heart attack and died in Nashville in 1974, at age 68. He was survived by his wife and two sons. Tex Ritter's son, John, became famous as an actor, playing Jack Tripper on the ABC sitcom Three's Company (1977–1984). In 2003, John died, at the age of 54, of an aortic dissection.

It was ruled a heart attack then, but years later, the family would come to learn about aortic aneurysms and believe now that was the cause of his death. A major star in the 1930s and 1940s as a Western cowboy for Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC) and Monogram Pictures, he was also the father of actor John Ritter.
