   • Appalshop started as a film workshop in 1969, and 50 years later we're still documenting and revitalizing the traditions and creativity of Appalachia. We tell stories that commercial industries don’t tell. We challenge stereotypes with Appalachian voices. And we do it all with artists who are from and committed to this region.

   • The films that young people made in that early workshop paved the way for its participants’ careers as professional filmmakers — and for the organization that came to be known as Appalshop. By 1975, the film-training workshop had twenty full-time employees and annual funding of $1 million.

   What happened to Appalshop?

   • By the end of the 1990s, Appalshop’s staff had more than doubled and its annual budget had increased as much as 400 percent. Several NEA Challenge Grants in the late 1980s allowed Appalshop staff more independence to access seed funding for new project development; Roadside Theater alone toured to 43 states and Europe.
