Mega Millions® began on August 31, 1996 as the Big Game. The first drawing took place on September 6, 1996, with six states participating: Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia. After exciting growth of the game in 1997, a Tuesday drawing was added in February 1998.
Mega Millions History. Mega Millions has been creating big winners for more than 20 years. It has been rebranded and the format has changed since it was launched, but the game has continued to grow and it now offers huge jackpots to players in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Each Mega Millions draw has nine levels of prizes you can win depending on how many numbers you match on your ticket. The bottom prize level, which is won by matching just the Mega Ball gives players $2, while the jackpot is won by matching all five numbers and the Mega Ball.
