    J. Patrick McNamara (30 October 1942 – 2 January 2023; age 80) was an actor who played Captain Taggert in the Star Trek: The Next Generation second season episode "Unnatural Selection".

    McNamara was probably best known for his role as Mr. Preston in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989, with Dan Shor, Rod Loomis, Jane Wiedlin, Hal Landon, Jr., Bernie Casey, and Marjean Holden), and its sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991, with William Sadler, Hal Landon, Jr., Roy Brocksmith, and Frank Welker).

    He also played supporting roles in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977, starring Terri Garr, with Gene Dynarski and Kirk Raymone), and 1941 (1979, with Elisha Cook, Michael McKean, Jerry Hardin, and Dick Miller), Roots: The Next Generation (1979, with Don Keefer), and Gideon's Trumpet (1980, with Richard Lineback, David Clennon, Jerry Hardin, and Seamon Glass).
