Gavin Bryars wrote a harpsichord concerto for him in 2023 and is currently writing a work for harpsichord and string quartet. Born in Tehran in 1984 and raised in the United States, Mahan Esfahani lived in Milan and then London for several years before taking up residence in Prague.
Gavin Bryars was born in Yorkshire in 1943. His first musical reputation was as a jazz bassist working in the early sixties with improvisers Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley. He abandoned improvisation in 1966 and worked for a time in the United States with John Cage.
