Pershing (born September 13, 1860, in Laclede, MO) steadily progressed up through the ranks of the military to become the decorated leader of US forces in Europe during World War I. He was the first to rank as General of the Armies of United States.

The story goes that when he arrived in France in 1917, at the head of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), he dramatically declared, "Lafayette, we are here!"
General Pershing, now a Major General with the temporary rank of full General, faced the largest and most difficult task of his career; assembling and training an American Army in Europe while keeping his forces independent of foreign commanders.
John J. Pershing, (born Sept. 13, 1860, Laclede, Mo., U.S.—died July 15, 1948, Washington, D.C.), U.S. army officer. He graduated from West Point and served on the western frontier (1886–98), in the Spanish-American War, in the Philippines (1899–1903, 1906–13), and as commander of a punitive raid against Pancho Villa (1916).
