Ulrich was born in 1413, the youngest child of Count Eberhard IV and his wife Henriette, Countess of Mömpelgard. [5] Eberhard died unexpectedly of illness on 2 July 1419, while Ulrich and his older brother Ludwig were both minors. Dated 1460 in the carved ivory decoration, this is the earliest knoiwn dated crossbow in existence.
