- Ultrahigh-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene UHMWPE is a linear polyolefin with a repeating unit of − CH 2 CH 2 −. Medical-grade UHMWPE has long chains with a molecular mass of 2 × 10 6 –6 × 10 6 g mol − 1 and is a semicrystalline polymer with a set of ordered regions embedded in a disordered amorphous phase (Turell and Bellare, 2004).

Sep 1, 2020 · Abstract. Three grades of polyethylene, with weight-average relative molar masses, ¯¯¯ ¯M W M ‾ W , of approximately 0.6 × 10 6, 5 × 10 6, and 9 × 10 6, were supplied as compression mouldings by a leading manufacturer of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). They were code-named PE06, PE5, and PE9, respectively.
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has extremely high abrasion resistance when compared with other thermoplastics. It also has exceptional impact resistance, even at cryogenic temperatures, and is superior to stainless steel.

Sep 1, 2020 · In this context, the term ‘ultra-high’ indicates a weight average relative molar mass, ˉM w, greater than 10 6. In practice, the minimum ˉM w for orthopaedic grades of polyethylene (PE) is about 5 × 10 6, which for linear PE means that chains have a contour length of at least 45 μm.
