Wilkinson was born in England, but his family later emigrated to Singapore and then to Australia when he was four years old. He attended Sydney Grammar School and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts/Commerce degree at the University of Sydney. During university days, Wilkinson learned how to play the acoustic guitar.
