The Shootist is a 1976 American Western film directed by Don Siegel and based on Glendon Swarthout's 1975 novel of the same name, [2] and written by Miles Hood Swarthout (the son of the author) and Scott Hale.
An aging gunfighter, JB Books (John Wayne), rides into town. His deeds are infamous and, despite his age, he is still feared and, by some, revered. However, Books is dying of cancer and has about two months to live. Initially his thoughts turn to finding a nice quite place where he can die in peace.
Trivia. The Shootist. James Stewart agreed to play a cameo role in the film only because John Wayne had specifically requested him. His brief screen time proved to be rather difficult. The bad acoustics of the huge, hollow sound stages worsened his hearing difficulties, and he stayed by himself most of the time.
The Shootist is about a surviving old gunslinger who knows he is dying. So he sends a letter to several outlaws (that somehow escaped the long arm of the law) to meet him at this town, where they are to have a final word with each other.
Overview. Afflicted with a terminal illness John Bernard Books, the last of the legendary gunfighters, quietly returns to Carson City for medical attention from his old friend Dr. Hostetler. Aware that his days are numbered, the troubled man seeks solace and peace in a boarding house run by a widow and her son.
It is 1901: He has outlived his century. A sawbones in the next state has given him the bad news and now he wants to hear it from the lips of Doc Hostetler, who nursed him back to health after a violent afternoon twenty years ago. And so he rides, the Shootist, into a Carson City to which the Old West has become an embarrassment.
