  2. It's not nonstop violence but there is a good amount. The dark humor is definitely there, along with regular humor. The whole premise of the movie is twisted i would say.

  3. Parents need to know that Pain & Gain is a vulgar, violent action comedy from Transformers director Michael Bay. The movie -- which was inspired by a real-life kidnapping, extortion, and murder -- is filled with shooting, chasing, fighting, and blood, as well as more gruesome, torturous images….

It's nice to see Michael Bay take a little break from explosion-fueled action movies, and do a dark comedy based on events that took place during the fall of 1994 to summer of 1995, in Miami.

Pain & Gain is a true crime tale set in the 1990s about three Miami bodybuilders (Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie) whose scheme to bilk a millionaire client (Tony Shalhoub) out of his fortune and property quickly devolves into torture, mayhem and murder.

Wahlberg's Daniel Lugo is, like Al Pacino's Miami gangster Tony "Scarface" Montana, a warped version of the American dream, a self-proclaimed "doer" whose blind adherence to being a success at all costs leads to awful consequences. Daniel's no criminal genius, though. In fact, the movie portrays him as dumb as a bag of hammers, and Wahlberg is at his best when playing dimwits (Boogie Nights, Ted).

Daniel enlists his employee Adrian (Mackie), whose juicing has led to erectile dysfunction, and an ex-con named Paul (Johnson) to help him kidnap and extort his client Victor Kershaw (Shalhoub), a man who is such a jerk that it's tough for even his supporters to sympathize with him. Paul had turned his back on drugs and booze and found Jesus. He legitimately wants to go straight, but soon finds himself thrust back into a world of temptation, which leads to many funny-sad moments for him. (It should be noted that Paul is a composite character; check out a spoilerish breakdown of the movie vs. the real case here.)

Johnson's the standout of this ensemble, which also includes Ed Harris as a private eye, Rebel Wilson as Adrian's wife, Ken Jeong as an obnoxious motivational speaker, Bar Paly as the guys' stripper compadre, and Rob Corddry as a shady gym owner.

Transformers director Michael Bay proves he doesn't need pyrotechnics to make an entertaining movie in the darkly comic true crime tale Pain & Gain, featuring Dwayne Johnson in an impressive performance.
