Hypothetically, let's say they spent 5 million on marketing. Now what if the film was bad and the movie only made say 4 million in theaters, they'd have lost a few million. But if that film was equally bad and was direct to dvd, they could've made say 3 million in dvd sales, they didn't have to spend money marketing it and make 2 million profit.
