I'll be honest, I still like Sword of Shannara even if its a copy of LOTR. It still kinda does its own thing and is very enjoyable for me. I only ever read that one and the 4 book Heritage of Shannara series that is like 300 years after the first series.

Del Rey and Brooks' entire intention, by their own admission, was to take the same basic story and make it more accessible and easier to digest. And I enjoyed the Shannara books as a kid. But there's no use pretending that it's not pretty much exact same story, fairly beat-for-beat. But that's not a criticism from me.
The only weapon that can fight the Power of Darkness is the Sword of Shannara. However, the Sword can only be wielded by a true heir of Shannara. That means Shea who is the last of the bloodline who now has the hope of all the races on their shoulders.
