The editing and pacing gives the film a dreamlike and hypnotizing vibe that is difficult to explain. Most of all, what makes the movie great are the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour-Hoffman. They both give rare once-in-a-lifetime performances in the same film.

To me, the most essential way to understand the movie is to consider the Master and Slave Dialectic. It's about how two self-conscious beings, people, can't recognize each other as such if they're trying to dominate or control each other.
