Dec 30, 2021 · Each sub genre has different characteristics but they all have one thing in common. They are intended to scare you. Without further fanfare, let’s explore the most popular subgenres of horror fiction, with some sterling examples and basic characteristics of each genre.

- Phobia: As the name suggests, phobia/isolation horror focuses on the horrors of survival. There is typically a district phobia present in these films like claustrophobia.
- Madness and Phobia: This subgenre focuses less on the deaths of the characters, but on the madness that drives them forward in the story. The terror is whether they have lost their minds due to circumstances, mental illness, or just psychopathic tendencies.
- Home Invasion and Survival: This subgenre normally involves a woman home alone or a group of people that are threatened by one or more assailants who are typically masked.
- Arthouse: Also known as elevated horror, arthouse horror focuses on psychological themes and atmosphere. Often, arthouse horror films have a distinct cinematic style that may delve into philosophical ideas that challenge the viewers' beliefs.
- Slasher Horror. Let’s start with one of the most beloved horror sub-genres. Many consider the slasher film one of the most sensational and popular genres.
- Zombie Horror. Another of the most recognized horror sub-genres is the zombie film. Introduced in 1968 by horror maestro George A. Romero, Night of the Living Dead quickly became a fan favorite.
- Folk Horror. Outside of hallmark styles such as slasher and zombie, many horror sub-genres explore what we find fascinating and frightening more thoroughly.
- Body Horror. Body horror is a sub-genre that explores the terrors of our human bodies. The sub-genre often gets associated with the career of horror filmmaker David Cronenberg and his classics—Scanners, Videodrome, and The Fly.
- Slasher Horror. Slasher horror novels tend to be more on the violent and bloody side, and they often involve serial killers and villains who are human (or very human-like) terrorizing or hunting down a person or a group of people.
- Comedy Horror. Horror, but make it funny! Comedy horror can be a lot of different things, but it understands that laughter is the best catharsis for terror.
- Psychological Horror. The purpose of psychological horror is to scare you, of course, but to also get you questioning the reality of the characters. Oftentimes what’s so scary about psychological horror is that no one will acknowledge the scary thing, or that the characters begin to question their own mental states.
- Supernatural Horror. Supernatural horror covers a very broad range of horror novels—anything from from ghosts, demonic possession, vampires, werewolves, monsters, or anything else paranormal.

- Slasher Movies. If a movie features an assembly line of attractive but largely forgettable teens being killed in all manners of bloody fashion, it’s probably a slasher movie.
- Monster Movies. Sometimes known by the more cheerful name creature features, monster movies pretty much defined the horror genre altogether between the 1930s and the 1950s, when Universal Studios unleashed a series of onscreen terrors, from Frankenstein (1931) to Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), and men in rubber suits stomped over miniature cities.
- Giallo. Giallo movies involve elements of a lot of genres—an arty and often sexy mix of slashers, thrillers, and mystery tales. The style was popularized in Italy in the 1960s and ’70s, and is particularly associated with certain directors—namely, Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Mario Bava—but wields a continued influence in Hollywood.
- Supernatural Horror. Creatures from worlds beyond our own are a horror staple—ghosts and ghouls, souls returning from the afterlife, and so on. Classic stuff.
