Dec 18, 2019 · It’s the hope, our cosmic hope isn’t just a hope for a disembodied existence. It’s for God reconciling all things and gathering up all of the goods of creation as well. It’s a very, I think it’s an ultimately a humanistic vision in the sense that it honors all the aspects of being human.
However, this means that the best Augustine can hope to accomplish is to provide a description of political life on earth, but not a prescription for how to obtain membership in the perfect society of heaven; for, even strict obedience to Christian precepts will not compensate for one’s not being gratuitously elected for salvation.

Jun 26, 2023 · We need some way to break this cycle, to avoid the despair of pessimism without embracing the presumption of optimism. Here is where Augustine of Hippo can help. His virtue of hope offers a way between – and beyond – optimism and pessimism. Enlisting Augustine as a teacher of hope might seem surprising.
- Instruct. To instruct a person is to help them understand the content being communicating, and without understanding, true instruction is absent.
- Delight. Mere instruction is not enough, a “hearer must be delighted so that he can be gripped and made to listen.” [7] Augustine believed this to be especially so for “the disdainful kind of person who is not satisfied by the truth presented anyhow, but accepts it only if expressed in such a way that the discourse also gives pleasure.”
- Move. The third aim of the preacher is to move the listener to action. This aim builds on instruction and proceeds past delight to create change in the listener, a change which sees them “impelled to action.”
A reading from St. Augustine in the Breviary this week is rather well known and summons us to humility about our sins. But I want to briefly consider a subtlety in the text regarding hope. St. Augustine writes: Let us never assume that if we live good lives we will be without sin; our lives should be praised only when we continue to beg for pardon.
