January 26, 1988
Australia celebrated its bicentennial with characteristic joviality, reenacting the arrival of Capt. Arthur Philip in Sydney Harbour in 1788. The exiled British convicts aboard Phillip's 11 ships were the first Europeans to settle permanently on the continent. Some of Australia's Aborigines were on hand to protest "the white invasion" of their land, but many others stood shoulder to shoulder with white Australians, excited by the sight of the prince and princess of Wales, who represented Queen Elizabeth II, the nation's chief of state. The huge crowds also included tens of thousands of new Australians immigrants from all over the world.
