The Skeppsholmen Church ( Swedish: Skeppsholmskyrkan) is a former church on the islet of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, Sweden. [1] History. Named after its location, the church was built 1823-1849 to replace a minor wooden church on Blasieholmen destroyed in the devastating fire of 1822.
The Church of the Holy Cross served the monastery until 1538, when it was abandoned for a hundred years as the Franciscan friary was disbanded in the Swedish Reformation. The church was re-established as a Lutheran church in 1640, when the nearby Church of the Holy Trinity was destroyed by fire.
May 13, 2024 · With its columns, arches, and a dome in the shape of an ancient temple, the church is a delight to the eye. Since 2002, Skeppsholmskyrkan has been desacralized, so there are no longer any religious services. But since it’s a national listed building, the cross on the dome, the pulpit, and the altarpiece are preserved.
