- In 1869 it was incorporated as a city and renamed Bayonne. From 1850 until World War I, Bayonne was renowned for its yacht building. Since 1875 it has been a centre for oil refining, and it is now the northern terminus for several pipeline systems, including the Big Inch (about 1,500 miles [2,400 km] long) from Longview, Texas.

Bayonne was known originally as Bergen Neck, located south of the Dutch settlement of Bergen, the predecessor of Jersey City. The area came under British rule in 1664 after they defeated the Dutch. During the American revolution, British and American forces clashed at Fort Delancey in what is now Bayonne.
