Ittoqqortoormiit is the closest inhabited place to Greenland’s highest mountain – Gunnbjørn’s Mountain (3,694m). Located in the North-East National Park, this is also the highest peak above the Arctic Circle. Ittoqqortoormiit means “the place with the big houses” in the East Greenlandic dialect.
Ittoqqortoormiit (East Greenlandic: [itːɔqːɔtːɔːmːiːt]; West Greenlandic: Illoqqortoormiut [iɬːɔqːɔtːɔːmːiut]), formerly known as Scoresbysund, is a settlement in the Sermersooq municipality in eastern Greenland. Its population was 345 as of 2020, and it has been described as one of the most remote settlements on Earth.
At 70°29’07″N 21°58’00″W, it nestles on Liverpool Land, east of Hurry Inlet near the mouth of the northern shore of the Kangertittivaq fjord, which empties into the Greenland Sea. Bordered by the vast National Park of Greenland, Ittoqqortoormiit is the epitome of nature’s grandeur and solitude.

Mar 6, 2018 · Ittoqqortoormiit is home to some 450 Greenlanders who live mainly of fishing and hunting. It is the only settlement in Northeast Greenland, located 500 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The nearest town is Tasiilaq, 800 kilometres to the south.
Known as the most remote inhabited community in the western hemisphere with only 373 inhabitants, Ittoqqortoormiit is located above the Arctic circle at the mouth of the largest fjord system in the world. As expected, there are a few challenges to visiting such a remote and extreme location.
Dec 20, 2023 · You can fly from Iceland to Nerlerit Inaat Airport, and then reach Ittoqqortoormiit by helicopter. I luckily reached this settlement during the summer season. Be aware that sometimes and in some places in Greenland, a mosquito net could be your best friend. People are super friendly here!
