The University of Liverpool (abbreviated UOL) is a public research university in Liverpool, England. Founded as a college in 1881, it gained its Royal Charter in 1903 with the ability to award degrees, and is also known to be one of the six ' red brick ' civic universities, the first to be referred to as The Original Red Brick.
The University of Liverpool is situated on a single compact campus, around 10 minutes' walk from the city centre. Academic facilities include: Two University libraries: the arts and humanities focused Sydney Jones library and the science, engineering and life sciences focused Harold Cohen libraries.
With a rich heritage stretching back to 1881, the University of Liverpool is the original ‘redbrick’ university. A founding member of the prestigious Russell Group , the top 24 research-led institutions in the UK, we are associated with nine Nobel Laureates.

The University of Liverpool is the original redbrick university. Ranked in the top 20 UK universities (Complete University Guide), it is a member of the Russell Group and in 2023 was awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework.
The university is mainly based around a single urban campus approximately five minutes' walk from Liverpool City Centre, at the top of Brownlow Hill and Mount Pleasant. Occupying 100 acres, it contains 192 non-residential buildings that house 69 lecture theatres, 114 teaching areas and research facilities.
The University of Liverpool was founded in 1881 and is now a Russell Group university which frequently ranks well in uni league tables. Liverpool is a major city, located in the northwest of England, near Manchester.
Although our main campus is in the heart of Liverpool, we also have a partner university in Suzhou, China. Many of our students start their studies in Liverpool, have the opportunity to spend time studying in China.
