His father quickly disaled him from these thoughts. Pope Benedict XIII insisted on the ordination of priests in return for the confirmation of the election of the Bishop of Hildesheim. After Clemens August finally decided to do so, he was ordained a priest in 1725 in The Palace of Swabia near Munich. His father died in 1726.

Clemens August von Bayern (aus dem Hause Wittelsbach) wurde von seinen Zeitgenossen als ‚Monsieur des cinq églises’ (Herr der fünf Kirchen) bezeichnet, denn er war nicht nur Kurfürst und Erzbischof von Köln, sondern auch Fürstbischof von Paderborn, Münster, Hildesheim und Osnabrück und damit einer der wichtigsten geistlichen Fürsten seiner Zeit.
