It's the actions, thoughts and personality of the person that makes them who they are. The Doctor isn't his real name yet he uses it as such, people use it for him, and it performs the function of his name. It embodies a huge legacy of his actions. It's not like knowing his name is going to reveal the secret truth of his soul.
