Jan 18, 2022 · Bishop is a small, unassuming trail-town in Inyo County, nestled in the heart of the Owens Valley. While looking at the town through a tourist lens, the list of things to do in Bishop may not seem exceptional on the surface.
BISHOP AND THE OWENS VALLEY. The City of Bishop in Inyo County, California was named for one of the first white settlers in the area, Samuel A. Bishop. Owens Lake was named for Richard Owens, a member of John C. Fremont’s 1845 exploration party which included Kit Carson and Ed Kern.
- Stroll Downtown Bishop. Bishop is the largest town in the Owens Valley. It has a charming downtown that invites strolling. You’ll see some historic buildings and Old West facades as you walk, as well as some stunning murals.
- Visit a Bakery (or Two!) in Downtown Bishop. If you love baked treats, you’ll be thrilled to read that Bishop boasts not one, but two super popular and highly regarded bakeries!
- Go Bouldering at the Buttermilk Boulders. If you climb, you probably know about the Buttermilks already. Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada a few miles outside the town of Bishop, the scenic climbing area is popular with all levels of climbers from all over the world.
- Visit the Volcanic Tablelands. While the Buttermilk Boulders are definitely iconic, they are not the only climbing locations in Bishop. The Happy and Sad Boulders, located in a canyon in the Volcanic Tableland northwest of Bishop, are also sought-after bouldering destinations, with the Sad Boulders considered more difficult.
