    • Show examples to spark ideas. A blank page, a blank canvas, and a blank screen can be intimidating. A collection of examples can help spark the imagination.
    • Encourage messing around. Most people assume that imagination takes place in the head, but the hands are just as important. To help children generate ideas for projects, we often encourage them to start messing around with materials.
    • Provide a wide variety of materials. Children are deeply influenced by the toys, tools and materials in the world around them. To engage children in creative activities, make sure they have access to a broad diversity of materials for drawing, building and crafting.
    • Embrace all types of making. Different children are interested in different types of making. Some enjoy making houses and castles with LEGO bricks. Some enjoy making games and animations with Scratch.
    • Encourage art activities. Arts and crafts can be done (and fun) at any age. The complexity of the art projects may change over time, but the idea is the same.
    • Limit screen time. Screen time, which includes TV, computers, phones, tablets, and other electronic devices, takes much time in children’s lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), finds kids spend about 7.5 hours daily on screens.
    • Allow time for imaginative play. When you have children, you may be tempted to get them involved in multiple activities. While keeping their schedule busy may introduce them to new experiences, you can make sure you still give them a chance to engage in imaginative play or other downtime activities that encourage creativity.
    • Other tips and tricks to inspire creativity. When doing artistic activities, you might try the following tips to help encourage their creativity: Do not stress about the mess.
    • Listen and watch. Creativity begins when your child finds something that engages their interest, so pay attention to your child’s curiosities and enthusiasms.
    • Take it slow. Depending on your child’s temperament and on the nature of your relationship, your enthusiasm can be encouraging or it can discourage your child’s interest.
    • Share your observations. When your child is ready, talk with them about how they might take their interests further.
    • Define realistic goals, both short-term and long-term. If your child is seriously interested in learning more about something, whether it’s dinosaurs, drawing, or computer engineering, help them think about what they’d like to do next in their learning, and where they might like to go with it further along the line.
