  2. May 4, 2023 · This report is an overview of provisional U.S. mortality data for 2022, including a comparison with 2021 death rates. In 2022, approximately 3,273,705 deaths † occurred in the United States. The estimated 2022 age-adjusted death rate decreased by 5.3%, from 879.7 per 100,000 persons in 2021 to 832.8.

In 2019, the most recent year with official death estimates, 2,854,838 Americans died, and 3,747,540 were born. That means that 8.7 people died per 1,000 that year — up from a low of 7.9 deaths per 1,000 people in 2009.

  5. Key findings. Data from the National Vital Statistics System. Life expectancy for the U.S. population in 2021 was 76.4 years, a decrease of 0.6 year from 2020. The age-adjusted death rate increased by 5.3% from 835.4 deaths per 100,000 standard population in 2020 to 879.7 in 2021.

  6. Deaths spiked almost 19% (535,191) between 2019 and 2020, from 2,854,838 to 3,390,029. For the past century, deaths followed an overall trend of gradual, linear increase (Figure 1). Though deaths fluctuate from one year to the next, the annual changes observed were generally small in magnitude.
