Cape Town is without doubt one of the top tourist attractions in the whole of South Africa, and no visit to South Africa is fully complete without visiting the “Mother City”. Despite many tourists enjoying Cape Town and its attractions, there is no shortage in key birding sites, and on a good day with great weather you can quite easily rack up over...

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is well known for its astonishing flora and adored by birders for its impressive avifauna. To get the best out of the garden you might plan to bird here first thing in the morning. Upon entering the garden keep an eye out on the vast, green, and lush lawns for the likes of Swee Waxbill, Cape Spurfowl, Helmeted...

Hands down one of the most popular birding spots in all of South Africa, Strandfontein Sewage Works attracts many a birder and is well known for frequent reports of South African rarities observed there. Being a wetland birding site, one can bird here a little later in the day and still manage to connect with everything that this location has to of...

Rooiels, a town named after the Red Alder plant found around these parts, ranks high on most local and international birders’ lists, as this is one of the most accessible spots to find a member of only two endemic families in South Africa. If you guessed Cape Rockjumper, you guessed right. Birding here is very straightforward and on a good day can ...

Stony Point Penguin Colony is probably the better option to view African Penguin in the Cape Town area, Boulders Beach being the alternative. Being less crowded and with the entry price a third of that of Boulders Beach, Stony Point offers some of the best penguin viewing in the False Bay region. Enter the parking area slowly, as quite often you en...

This part of the Table Mountain National Park is a great spot for the slightly more relaxed birder who wants to enjoy good birds, interesting wildlife, and beautiful scenery. Upon entering the reserve one can already scan the protea-strewn hillsides for Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted and Malachite Sunbirds, Bokmakierie, and Rock Kestrel going abou...

    • TABLE MOUNTAIN. I usually advise birders to stay away from Table Mountain. After all, most visitors take the cable car to the windswept, sun-roasted Table Top which is pretty thin on birdlife although you’ll always see a Red-winged Starling (Onychognathus morio) – see image above.
    • KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANICAL GARDENS. With dozens of indigenous habitats set against natural forest and lawns swept by flocks of Egyptian Geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca), Helmeted Guinea Fowl (Numida meleagris) and Cape Spurfowl (Pternistis capensis), Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is as rewarding for the bird watcher as it is for the botanist.
    • CAPE OF GOOD HOPE RESERVE. Ignore the temptation to drive straight down to Cape Point: the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is 57 square kilometres of virtually deserted wilderness and there are excellent birding corners to explore before you marvel at the views at Cape Point itself.
    • STRANDFONTEIN SEWAGE WORKS & RONDEVLEI NATURE RESERVE. Connecting the Cape Peninsula to the mountains of the Winelands, the Cape Flats is now a mostly flat and featureless expanse of housing and alien vegetation.
  4. Aug 19, 2021 · With more than 610 bird species recorded in Cape Town, and 60 of Southern Africa’s 86 endemic birds found in the Western Cape, it is well worth grabbing your bird-book and binoculars and go on a mission around the Mother City in search of some significant sights.

  5. Jun 26, 2019 · More than 100 seabird species have been spotted along the length of South Africa’s spectacular coastline, but when it comes to pelagic birding, the nutrient-rich waters of the Cape are second to none. At the fishing grounds south of Cape Point, trawlers attract a smorgasbord of species.
