However, it was inspired by some of Zach Braff’s own experiences growing up in New Jersey, which adds a personal touch to the narrative. 3. When was Garden State released? Braff based the film on his real life experiences. It was filmed in April and May 2003 and released on July 28, 2004. New Jersey was the main setting and primary shooting location. Garden State received positive reviews and was a box office success.
- In this swimming pool scene (jump to one minute 20), the fog was not there for effect. The site was originally chosen because the Manhattan Skyline was clearly visible but it just happened to be incredibly foggy on the day of filming.
- Largeman works in a Vietnamese restaurant which is a reference to Zach Braff's own time working in a French-Vietnamese restaurant when he was a struggling actor.
- The house used as Jesse's mansion is Crocker Mansion, a real mansion in Mahwah, New Jersey, which has 75 rooms. Scenes from Escape to Witch Mountain were also shot there.
- Zach Braff originally titled the movie "Large's Ark" (see fact 16 for why) and tested the name on various messengers coming to his house during production.

- IT WAS ORIGINALLY TITLED LARGE’S ARK. Braff's character, Andrew Largeman, went by the nickname “Large.” According to Braff, there are intentional allusions throughout the movie to Noah’s Ark.
- BRAFF ESTIMATES THAT "ABOUT 75 PERCENT" OF THE STUFF IN THE MOVIE ACTUALLY HAPPENED. Jesse shot a flaming arrow toward the heavens because Braff’s friend liked to shoot arrows into the air for fun.
- BRAFF SENT A CD WITH EACH SCRIPT. In trying to attract interest in the movie, Braff made a mix of the music he wanted in it. Some actors who passed on the film cushioned the blow by commenting on how much they liked the CD.
