While season one sets up the overarching concept of the series and lets viewers get to know the characters and the situation, with Edith and Archie’s daughter and her husband living with them, the first season doesn’t really get into the real heart of the series. The Jeffersons for instance don’t make their first appearance in the show until late i...

This season has all of the drama, and that’s not necessarily the best way for a sitcom to stay funny. The three-part opening storyline of the season features Archie cheating on Edith with a waitress, with Edith eventually finding out and leaving him (though she eventually comes back). Archie has to have surgery, Mike gets hit by a subway train, and...

A lot of changes happen in season eight, which is pretty unusual for a sitcom, since they’re well-known for often having the same status quo at the end of each episode. RELATED: Power Ranges: 10 Darkest Seasons In The Franchise, Ranked Archie buys a bar, Edith has a crisis of faith, and Mike & Gloria end the season by moving to California, removing...

Final seasons are often the least likedseasons of a series, and usually that’s for good reason. By this point, a lot of series will have started to fall off in quality, due to a lack of ideas or a struggle to keep things interesting without changing the formula too much. In All in the Family’s case, Mike and Gloria are no longer cast regulars, havi...

Season six is one of the few seasons in the series that takes a truly sitcom format. Each episode sees the characters involved in different shenanigans and uncomfortable situations, especially Archie, who is constantly faced with the ways in which the world has changed— such as when he performs CPR to help Beverly, who turns out to be a drag artist...

Season five is the last season with the Jeffersons, which makes it bittersweet. But it does include the pilot episode of The Jeffersons, one of several spin-offs of All in the Family, making it a fun season for seeing the Jeffersons moving into a new situation and becoming successful. Edith becomes much more of a character in her own right in this ...

All in the Familyis known for being a series that feels very dated in a lot of ways. Archie is a character who represents an older generation, and he is constantly pushing back against new ways of thinking, which to modern viewers doesn’t make him an easy guy to like. Season four really pushes a lot of these feelings, with the jokes and gags revolv...

Many seasons focus on different issues, with Archie ending up in situations that make him either question his beliefs or double down on them. In season three, the recurring topic is that of a woman’s place in the world. Between Archie and Mike, who is comparatively much better educated about feminism, there are a lot of mix-ups and bad feelings reg...

Season two is the first full season with the Jeffersons as the Bunkers’ neighborhoods, and this sets off a great dynamic. Archie and George are alike in a lot of ways, and they even dislike each other for similar reasons. Their relationship is hilarious and shows— without being overly didactic— just how silly racism is, when two people can be so si...

  3. I won't disagree that the quality of the show wasn't as good than in the earlier seasons, but there were some good late-era AITF episodes--the one where Archie and Mike got locked-in the basement of the bar, and there was a three-parter where Archie pretty much cheated on Edith with that blonde waitress, and Edith comes close to leaving him.
